Amir's birth. Amir's mother, Sofia Akrami, dies giving Amir birth. The following year Hassan was born. The United States rejects Afghanistan's request to buy weapons. Afghanistan turns to Russia and Russia provides help with weapons. Communist Party formed.

Amir wins the kite contest. Hassan is raped. The following year Hassan and Ali leave. Coup dethrones Zahir Shan while he is on vacation in Europe. Momammad Daoud Khan abolishes monarchy, declares himself President, and establishes Republic of Afghanistan.
1978:
Communist Coup kills President Daoud. Afghan guerills (Mujahideen) movement born.
1981:
Baba and Amir leave Afghanistan. Russia invades Afghanistan.
1982:
Baba and Amir come to San Francisco. Mujahideen continues revolts. United Nations investigates human rights violations.
1983:
Amir graduates from Hight School.
1984:
Amir meets Soraya. Ali is killed by a land mine.
1986:
Amir and Soraya marry. Baba dies.

Amir has first novel accepted. Peace agreement signed in Geneva. Soviet Union withdraws. Mujahideen continue to resist government which they say is "puppet" of the Soviet Union. They declare their own "government-in-exile" leader.

Hassan's mother, Sanaubar, returns.
1992:
The Mujahideen take Kabul and liberate Afghanistan, form an Islamic state, and elect Professor Burhannudin Rabbani as President.
1995:
Sanaubar dies. The birth of the Taliban militia.
1996:
Taliban takes over.
2000:
Hassan and Farzana are killed.
2001:
Amir returns home with Sohrab.
2002:
Amir and Sohrab fly the kite. Amir runs the kite for him. Afghanistan adopts a new constitution with three-branch government. Harmad Karzai is elected President.
